What Is the Purpose of Gathering This Information?

Since 1990, the ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom has maintained a confidential database on challenged materials. ALA collects information from two sources: media reports and reports submitted by individuals. MASL is participating in this effort to support intellectual freedom by gathering information on challenges to titles in Missouri.

How Can I Report?

The below form will allow you to submit information regarding a challenge in your school or district. Should you not feel comfortable submitting this information online, please know you can submit this information to the MASL office in other ways. No matter what method you choose to report, your information will be kept strictly confidential.

What Happens to the Information?

All reported challenges are compiled into a database maintained by ALA. Reports of challenges culled from media across the country are compiled in the bimonthly Newsletter on Intellectual Freedom; those reports are then compiled in the Banned Books Week Resource Guide. Challenges reported to MASL and the ALA by individuals are kept confidential and used for statistical purposes only. In these cases, ALA will release only the title of the book being challenged, the state, and the type of institution (school, public library). The name of the institution and its town will not be disclosed. A list of most frequently challenge books is compiled from these challenges for each annual Banned Books Week.

Please Complete the Below Form to Report Challenges to Titles Which Occurred Between January 1, 2014 and December 31, 2014.

Please describe the nature of the challenge, including:

The party who challenged the title.
The reason the party challenged the title.
The outcome and impact of the challenge.
Any other information you deem pertinent.
To gather accurate information and provide comprehensive support, MASL is requesting you provide your name, school district and email contact information. This information, along with the information provided above, will be kept strictly confidential to MASL, AASL and ALA. It will only used to provide those reporting challenges with support. MASL will NOT release any information gathered through this form to any other parties.
