Celebrate the Contributions of Young Immigrants
TheAmerican Immigration Council isaccepting nominations for its2013 Immigrant Youth Achievement Award,celebrating high-achieving young immigrants, whose personalaccomplishments and contributions demonstrate the important impactyoung immigrants are having on our nation every day. The honoree mustbe an immigrant to the United States, including those who have becomenaturalized citizens, and between the ages of 14 and 25 as of April11, 2013. The accomplishments of the honoree must reflect more thanpersonal success and should demonstrate a commitment to making apositive impact in their community or the world around them. Thehonoree will receive a $1,000 award and a trip to the Council’sAnnual Benefit Dinner, in Washington, D.C., on April 11, 2013. TheCouncil will cover the costs of travel and accommodations for thehonoree and a parent or guardian if the honoree is a minor. Pastnominees have emigrated from countries such as Ireland, India,Mexico, Cambodia, China and Cuba and have made contributions inliterature, journalism, music and politics.

Encourage Community-wide Reading
TheBig Read is acceptingapplications from nonprofit organizations to develop community-widereading programs between September 2013 and June 2014. The Big Readis a national program sponsored by the NationalEndowment for the Arts.The program is designed to revitalize the role of literature inAmerican culture and to encourage reading for pleasure andenlightenment. Activities focus on one book or poet from TheBig Read Library.Organizations selected to participate in The Big Read will receive agrant ranging from $2,500 to $20,000 as well as educational andpromotional materials and access to online training resources andopportunities. Approximately 75 organizations from across the countrywill be selected.
Deadline:February 5, 2013, 4:00 p.m. (CST), for applications

Use Math to Drive Curiosity
RaytheonCompany is callingfor submissions to its 2012–2013 MathMovesUMiddle SchoolGrant and Scholarship Program.To participate, sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students nationwideare invited to illustrate the importance of math in the mission toMars and in space exploration in general. Student submissions will beevaluated on creativity, originality, time commitment and the use ofmath equations to demonstrate an enthusiasm for math and spaceexploration. Up to 150 students will be awarded $1,000 scholarshipsto be used for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) campprograms or college. In addition, the students’ schools willreceive matching grants of $1,000 to be used for math-relatedprograms.

TheArizona K12 Centerat Northern ArizonaUniversity hasdeveloped a TechnologyIntegration Matrix(TIM) designed to help K–12 teachers understand whether they are"doing it right” when it comes to integrating technology in theclassroom. The matrix aligns five levels of technologyintegration—entry, adoption, adaptation, infusion andtransformation—with five characteristics of meaningfullearning—active, collaborative, constructive, authentic and goaldirected. Together, the five levels of technology integration and thefive characteristics of meaningful learning environments create amatrix of 25 cells.

Improve Accessibility and Efficiency of Online Assessments
OnDecember 28, 2012, the Partnershipfor the Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers(PARCC), one of two consortia designing curricula and assessments forCommon Core State Standards, released its "minimumspecifications” and"recommendedtechnologyguidelinesfor testing under the Common Core. The guidelines address such areasas acceptable screen sizes and devices permissible for the testing,plus the types of security needed regarding Internet access, camerasand other device features. Earlier in December, the SmarterBalanced Assessment Consortiumreleased its own list of technology requirements and recommendations.

Explore American Culture
TheUS State Departmenthas jumped into the ed-tech world with TraceEffects, anonline gameintended to help teach "American English” to youth between theages of 12 and 16 in more than 30 countries. TraceEffects tells thestory of Trace, an androgynous male character who returns from thefuture to visit the United States charged with changing the world forthe better. If he’s unsuccessful, he won’t be able to return tohis own time. Throughout the course of the game, Trace travels theUnited States to such sites as New Orleans and the Grand Canyon,learning about the unique cultures, interacting with local people andcompleting missions. The missions are related to key themes woventhroughout the game that include entrepreneurship, communityactivism, empowerment of women, science and innovation, environmentalconservation and conflict resolution. Students can choose differentways to solve missions and help Trace return home.

Expand Nondiscriminatory Access to Libraries
Anew website offers librarians a self-pacedonline curriculum of videos, gamesand assessments to help them better meet the needs of students withdisabilities. Project ENABLE(ExpandingNondiscriminatoryAccessbyLibrariansEverywhere)was developed by Ruth V. Small of SyracuseUniversity’sSchool of Information Studies aftershe conducted a survey of school librarians and found that they gavethemselves low scores in the area of disability services. The ProjectENABLE training modules werelaunched nationally in the fall of 2012. The site contains fiveself-paced independent learning modules. Each module includescontent, activities and assessments that parallel, extend and enrichthe project’s summer face-to-face workshops.

Fight Off the Pathogens
GermBlaster is a freeiPadand iPhonegame,developed by RiceUniversity’sCenter for Technology in Teaching and Learning,in which students learn about six types of pathogens and the"weapons” used to fight them. Before starting the game, studentsreview each pathogen and its characteristics. Then they review themethods used to fight those pathogens. In the game, students fightoff the pathogens by selecting the appropriate weapon to kill theapproaching pathogens. If they get stuck and can’t remember whichweapons fight which pathogens, students can pause the game to look upinformation about the pathogens.

Put an Artistic Spin on the Periodic Table
ThePeriodic Table Projectis a freeappfor the iPad andiPhone developedby the University ofWaterloo and 3M.Over the course of development, the researchers gathered drawingsrepresenting the elements from students around the world. Eachelement is represented by a student’s drawing. Users simply clickon a drawing to learn about that element. All of the standardinformation about an element found on a standard periodic table isincluded. The Periodic Table Project app also includes the two newlynamed elements. Today’sstudents can read Shakespeare’s works on their iPadsthrough ShakespearebyReaddle,which puts Shakespeare’s famous and lesser-known works on theirmobile devices for free.Shakespeare by Readdle includes all of Shakespeare’s publishedworks. The app includes a search function to find specific phraseswritten by Shakespeare. Users can customize the app to adjust thecolor scheme, font style and font size. Integrate Algebra and Game Play
DragonBoxis a multiplatform gamethat uses drag-and-drop mechanics to teach the basics of algebra. Theappis available for $5.99 in Android,iOS, Windowsand Maceditions—and soon a web version will be available. Inthe game, everything begins as a picture. Bring the Universe to Your Classroom
Mars3D is a NASAwebsite from the JetPropulsion Laboratory atCalifornia Institute of Technology,featuring a gallery with dozens of images of Mars that students canview with 3D glasses. If students don’t have 3D glasses, NASA hasprovided directionsfor making their own 3Dglasses at home or atschool. The site includes a PDF to print as the template for theglasses, and the rest of the materials are easily found in stores.

Tell a Story in Graphs
GraphingStories is a newwebsite featuring 24 short videosthat tell a mathematical story. Students then retell the story bygraphing it. All of the graphing stories videos can be downloaded foruse in the classroom. Graphing Stories even provides graphtemplates(downloadable PDF file) for students to use in graphing theirstories. The project is a collaboration between Dan Meyer, who taughthigh school mathematics for six years and studies at StanfordUniversity, and BuzzMath, an interactive math website that focuses onlearning and practicing middle school mathematics skills.

VisualizingCultures is aninnovative project created and developed at the MassachusettsInstitute of Technology(MIT). The program consists of 13 visual narratives accompanied byessays. Topical units to date focus on Japan in the modern world andearly modern China. The thrust of these explorations extends beyondAsia per se, however, to address "culture” in much broaderways—cultures of modernization, war and peace, consumerism, imagesof "self” and "others” and more. The units are generallycomprised of four sections: Essays,Visual Narratives,ImageDatabase(Gallery and VCID) and Videoand Animation (VCTV).The VisualizingCultures Curriculumoffers a full complement of standards-compliant lessons,providing a pathway for teachers and students to become activehistorians and knowledgeable readers of images.
