Pre-Conference Information

This year, MASL is offering three Pre-Conference Workshop options for members to choose from.  These Pre-Conference sessions will be offered on Sunday, March 26th from 9:00am to 12:00pm at Union Station.  See below for workshop descriptions and registration information.

Workshops

ESSA & SCHOOL LIBRARIES

Presenter:  Linda Weatherspoon, Retired School Librarian, AASL Regional Director – Region 3

The workshop will:

  • include the most current information on developments at the Federal level and work through the sections of ESSA that can be directly linked to the school librarian/library program;
  • connect ESSA language to school librarian’s role; and
  • discuss current state work with recommendations for opportunities at state and local levels to ensure the ‘effective school library program’ language in ESSA.

The hands-on small group work will aid in identifying stakeholders, building coalitions, message crafting and elevator speech development.

This outreach to state affiliates is part of the AASL Vision Plan for Implementing ESSA approved by the AASL Board of Directors at ALA Annual Conference in Orlando.

While the content will be directly related to ESSA, the tools and exercise portion is advocacy for positioning school librarians in general as leaders for teaching and learning. ESSA workshops have been offered to each state and will be posted as they are confirmed.  Please check back often for specific dates and locations.

FACING THE FUTURE OF OUR SCHOOLS: FUTURE READY SCHOOLS AND LEADING BEYOND THE LIBRARY

*This session is brought to you by Follett and Project Connect.

Presenters:  Britten Follett and Caroline See of Follett and Shannon Miller of Future Ready

Register for this 3-hour pre-conference session, which will focus on two issues that all school librarians are facing.

The first portion of the discussion will feature a conversation with a panel of superintendents.  The conversation will include an overview of the challenges schools are facing, the opportunities and constraints of the ESSA, and the strategic directions ahead.  Additionally, it will include the superintendents’ perception of school libraries and why they are or are not part of the strategy to ensure future ready schools.    Watch for additional information coming soon on the superintendents that will be participating.

The second portion of the session will focus on leading beyond the library.  Librarians are faced with increasing challenges affecting digital literacy, information literacy, and curriculum. Each of these has a significant impact on students and teachers. During this session, learn about clear and simple solutions to these challenges, cultivate networks to promote innovative thinking about libraries, and get a multitude of resources that promote future-readiness.

This is a session that you cannot afford to miss!  Register today to guarantee your seat to learn more about these two important topics.

NEW LIBRARIAN BOOTCAMP - Part II

Presenters:  Liz Ferguson and Jen Caster, Library Media Specialists with the Belton School District and Melissa Ray, Library Media Specialist, Ferguson-Florrisant School District

Back by popular demand, experienced school librarians will be sharing their wisdom and insight with new librarians.  This interactive session will build upon information shared during the 2016 workshop, so we encourage last year's bootcamp attendees to join us again!  However, previous participation in not required.

More information will be coming soon as the program is developed.

This workshop will be FREE to new MASL MEMBER librarians who also register for the Spring Conference.  Please contact the MASL Office for membership verification and a promotional code to use during registration checkout.
