On Sunday, May 22, 2011 the community of Joplin was hit by a devastating EF-5 tornado. Several area schools were significantly damaged or destroyed by this storm. Almost half of the Joplin School District's 8,000 students live in the area damaged by the tornado. Seven Joplin students and one Joplin Schools staff member were lost in the storm.
Many MASL members and professional colleagues from across the country have expressed a desire to help Joplin librarians and their schools rebuild. Below, please find information on how you can help. MASL encourages you to share this information with family, friends and professional colleagues. Davidson Titles, Inc.Attn: EasyGift Code EEC41PO Box 3538
During the first week of August members from MASL's regions assisted the Joplin Schools librarians in preparing their libraries for the start of school. More than 50 members volunteered their time and expertise throughout the week. At this time there are no volunteer opportunities through MASL, however as the Association becomes aware of volunteer opportunities they will be publicized.
Click here to view an article from the School Library Journal about these volunteers.
Mackin Educational Resources has graciously set up a fundraising site for the Joplin librarians. 100% of funds raised will be given to librarians who lost their libraries, and the librarians will have complete discretion over what they purchase through Mackin with these funds: books, ebooks, online databases, and more. Additionally, Mackin will ship their items free of charge, and the items will arrive cataloged to the librarians' specifications, and Mackin will match 10% of every $100 donated.
