Fall Seminar rate is $81.90/night for a standard room (either 2 Queen size beds or 1 King). Price includes a Free Hot Breakfast including waffles, biscuits and gravy, hard boiled eggs, pastries, etc. The hotel is new and opened in Winter 2008 as a smoke-free facility. Please make your reservation before October 10 to ensure you receive the Fall Seminar rate. HOTEL ROOMS ARE SOLD OUT. Please check other local hotels for accomodations.

READING IS A FOUR WAY STRETCH!     A fun look at four unique thinking processes  that determine who we are.  Find out why reading tastes vary along with titles to suit each thinking mode. Discover easy-to-use whole brain strategies that promote reading and learning. A  joyful session that proves READING IS NOT A SPECTATOR SPORT!

Workshop PreviewsBreakout Sessions will include:

    • NON FICTION IN THE PRIMARY GRADES – NANCY POLETTE
      Reluctant readers are more often "turned on" by exciting non fiction than by fiction.  Discover the tools that professional authors use to create exciting non fiction.  Show your students how to combine fact and fiction with non fiction storytelling.  Find simple reading and writing strategies that will bring the real world (past and present) too your students.
    • THE 5 R’S: READING, RESEARCHING, REFLECTING, RELATING AND REPORTING - Maggie Newbold and Joe Allen
      The 2008 recipients of the Teacher Librarian Collaboration Award (TLC) will present their winning collaboration proposal.  Allen and Newbold will describe the collaborative psychology project that encourages high school students to go beyond their textbooks for information and to make real world connections.  Students READ a book; RESEARCH a self-selected topic that relates to psychology; REFLECT on what they have read; RELATE what they have read and researched to themselves and their world; REPORT on what they have learned.  This project is for high school students, but could be adapted to any grade level and subject.  Suggestions for how to submit an award winning application will also be given. Deadline for applications: November 15.  Guidelines are available on the MASL website.
    • DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION - Elaine Callaway 
      Elementary (grades K-8) Resources available from Department of Conservation     
    • LURING READERS WITH IMPROVISATION & READERS THEATRE Elem/Middle School /High School – NANCY POLETTE
      Here are unique ways to share the joys of the reading experience. Improvisation is fun and mind-challenging!  READING HAS NEVER BEEN SO MUCH FUN! Here are simple techniques to use with any group of children  whether you  have five or fifty-five minutes.  You can never be wrong with improvisation games which serve as springboards to success in reading.    In addition,  several forms of readers theatre including those that can be done in a few minutes with no writing required.
    • NEW SERIES BOOKS  - Dea Borneman et al
      New Series Books for Upper Elementary and Middle School Collections Presented by members of the Book Review Board of Missouri. Reviewers will book talk recently published series books, giving evaluation tips, and allowing participants hands-on time at the end of the session to browse through the books.  Handouts will be provided.
