Happy New (School) Year, MASL Members! Although I’m always sad to see the summer come to an end, the beginning of a new school year is an exciting time for me. Very few people work in a profession that allows them a fresh start every year. The new year brings so many opportunities: a new group of students to work with; new programs, ideas, and technologies to implement; new lessons to teach; new books to read and share; and new opportunities for professional learning.
As you establish your professional goals for the year, please remember that MASL is here to support you! As a MASL member, you have access to a wealth of information via the MASL website at www.maslonline.org. One of the most popular and valuable website resources is the membership forum, which allows you to reach out to fellow librarians when you have questions or need ideas. Do you know that MASL is on Twitter? Our Twitter handle is @MASL Online. You don’t need a twitter account to follow us. Simply text the message “Follow @MASLOnline” to 40404, and MASL tweets will come directly to your smartphone! Following MASL on Twitter is a great way to get the most up-to-date information on professional development opportunities and other events.
Speaking of professional development opportunities, Mernie Maestas, MASL’s 2nd Vice President, is planning TWO great Fall Professional Development Days! The first one will be held at Grandview High School in the Kansas City area on Saturday, September 19, 2015. The second one will take place at Francis Howell Central High School in the St. Louis area on Saturday, October 3, 2015. The theme for both events is “Create Curiosity at Your Library” and similar content will be shared at each event. You don’t want to miss this opportunity! Choose the location and/or date that is most convenient for you. For more information or to register, visit the Fall PD Day page of the MASL website at http://www.maslonline.org/?FallPDDay.
Even though April is a long way off, be sure to mark your calendars for April 24-26, the dates for MASL’s 2016 Spring Conference! The Spring Conference Committee, led by 1st Vice President Amy Taylor and Conference Co-Chairs Jenni George and Shannon Grieshaber, are planning a truly spectacular event for us. The conference theme is “The Evolved Librarian: Adaptation, Selection, Survival.” There will be some exciting changes to our usual format, so you definitely want to be there! Remember, MASL’s Spring Conference is the only statewide conference that offers you workshops on technology and more, which matters because while technology is an important part of our job, our job involves a lot more than just technology.
Best wishes for a great school year!
