About the Featured Presenter:

April Burton is the Instructional Technology Content Leader for the Francis Howell School District.  English teacher turned French teacher turned tech junkie, April’s passion is using technology to engage and innovate.  April continuously works with teachers to “think differently” about instruction and assessment.  As a firm believer in the use of tech to transform the classroom, April works diligently to connect teachers to just the right tool to partner content area goals with authentic learning.  April was recognized as the Francis Howell District Teacher of the Year, has been an METC Spotlight Educator, and has been featured in several publications such as School Administrator, the monthly magazine of the AASA.

Crack the Code:  Bring Coding to All Students

With millions of openings in the field of computer science, the need for potential employees with the ability to code is growing.  But coding is not just for the computer programmer.   The ability to code gives students the opportunity to work together, to learn problem-solving skills, and to think creatively, all while introducing them to the foundations of computer science.  In this session, we will look at lesson plans and resources to get your students coding.  Whether you teach pre-readers or high school-aged students, there are thousands of ready-to-use activities at your fingertips.    


Global Collaboration: Move Your Students Beyond Those Four Walls

Connecting students to experts in the field or providing the opportunity to collaborate with other students globally provides a natural "buy-in" for your students. In this session, let’s explore ways that teachers can make connections with classrooms across the globe, as well as identify activities in any content area that can include global collaboration. The world is out there. It's time to share it with your students!



Building Your PLN: Twitter, Google+, Oh, my!

Ever feel like you’re going it alone?  Searching for great ideas, but don’t know where to turn?  You’re PLN has the support that you are looking for.  Platforms like Twitter, Google +, and many more offer opportunities to learn from other educators across the globe!   Whether you’re in your pj’s on Saturday morning or sitting at your desk in the afternoon, there is something for everyone.  Social media offers the PD you need, just when you need it.  Let’s connect and build your network of educators to help you along your way!



Dr. Edward Katcher

About the Featured Presenter:

Dr. Edward Katcher has held the positions of alternative high school teacher, school counselor, vocational coordinator, assistant high school principal, high school principal, assistant superintendent of schools, chief financial officer of schools, deputy superintendent of schools, full school superintendent, and university professor. He is an active consultant who specializes in the underachieving child. He holds a B.S. degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia, a M.E. degree from the University of Missouri in St Louis, an Ed.S. degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia and an Ed.D. from the University of Missouri in Columbia.  Dr. Katcher was expelled from high school at the beginning of the tenth grade and received his high school equivalency while serving in the U.S.A.F.

While the library has existed through decades of change, those changes are accelerating. Once seen as the center of information, where does the media stand today? Let us explore ways that the Media Center can transition from being a service center for technology to a venue into the infinite highway of cognitive enhancement.


The Library/Media Center: Dealing a New Ability Demographic

The most mysterious and powerful organ in the human body is the brain.  The latest brain research indicates that our cognitive and mental abilities can in fact improve-- our brains can physically change and become stronger.  Imagine what the impact of these findings means for the world of education! This session will focus on how this new brain research can inform and shape the library program.


The Library/Media Center:  A Pressing Need for Globalization

Most instruction in our schools goes from the morning to early afternoon.  When it is 3pm in Missouri it is 3am in China, 9pm in England, and 10pm in Germany. Our schools already have the hardware and most of the software is free to do international interactive learning.  Let us discuss low cost ways the library media center can take a leadership position in hooking up our schools to a new global reality.
